I wouldnt care if people owned pit bulls, if only it was the owners and their families who were hurt by them when they snapped. When someone you love is constantly being exposed to a danger not of their own choosing, its hard to be accepting of other peoples desire to own an animal that can do such horrific damage to them. Its like allowing people to own wild tigers or wolves without any special restrictions different from that of owning a cat or dog. No one would tolerate it if that tiger killed even one child... and yet people demand we continue to allow this breed which has shown over and over and over again to be more dangerous than the average.
